Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles unveiled the brand new Transporter medium van at IAA Trasportation 2024, giving the public its first close-up look of the new model.
The latest VW Transporter is based on the same platform as the Ford Transit Custom, and will be available in several specifications, including a crew van and panel van in both standard and extended wheelbase options.
This release marks the 7th generation of the VW Transporter, and it boasts improvements to space, payoad, trailer weight, and economic efficiency. Visually, the new model has an updated modern design, though it maintains recognisable traits of the older generation vehicles.
Load volume has increased by 10%, with the new Transporter boasting a 5.8m3 load space.
The maximum payload has also increased and is now at 1.33 tonnes. This is a significant payload that rivals many larger vehicles’ weight capacities. Towing capacity has also been improved.
Internally, the new VW Transporter has been given a full cockpit redesign. A combination of digital displays and physical controls is designed to provide the best of both worlds. Additionally, VW have fitted a host of USB and 12V sockets to connect devices to. In the electric variants, there is also an option to add up to three 230V sockets.
The VW Transporter will be available with a range of turbocharged diesel engines and, for the first time, fully electric and plug-in hybrid variants. The diesel engines range in power from 110PS to 170PS, while the electric versions have motors with 136PS to 286PS capability.
Reception to the new vehicle has been positive, and we await the full spec release in the coming months.
Sales are expected to launch in early 2025, with more pricing and specification details being released closer to that time.
