UK Light Vehicle Registrations passed 350,000 registrations in 2024, a rise of 3% over the previous year. The latest numbers from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) reported a strong December rounding off a very good year.
27,221 new LCVs were registered in December 2024 to being the yearly total to 351,834 units, and while the monthly total was down 8% over December 2023, the yearly total was the best since 2021.
Small, medium, and large van registrations grew in 2024, showing a general increase across the board. The majority of these fell into the large van category, between 2.5t and 3.5t, with 233,216 units registered.
Pickups and 4x4s showed a reduction in registrations, possibly relating to the coming change in tax status for these vehicles which may make them less attractive for business use.
Battery Electric Vans (BEV) registrations increased by 1.3%, but this barely moved the needle when looking at market share. With a static market share of less than 6% since 2023, it is clear that current electric van initiatives are not sufficient to drive the changes specified in the Zero Emission Vehicle Mandate.
Mike Hawes, SMMT Chief Executive, said, “Vans, 4x4s and pick-ups keep businesses everywhere on the move, making this sector a barometer of the UK economy. The best overall volume in three years, therefore, is good news with van makers striving to deliver abundant and competitive EV choice. Buyer confidence, however, will inevitably be undermined when charging infrastructure does not meet the needs of fleet operations. A review of EV regulation is crucial, therefore, to reflect current market realities and ensure ambitions are deliverable, without any negative and costly consequences.”
As time passes, the BEV situation becomes more crucial, and the government will need to revisit their plans to provide sufficient infrastructure for electric vans, so that consumers have the confidence to use them.
